The founder and current MD of BITS Ltd is Ken Birse who graduated from St Andrews University in 1974 with a BSc (Honours) degree in Computational Science. Following a year with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in Nigeria teaching mathematics to secondary school pupils Ken commenced his career in computing with CAP Ltd, at that time the largest independent software house in the UK. This position was based in London and then Reading and involved developing software in COBOL, BASIC and RPG as well as Team Leading, Quality Control and Standards supervision. In 1979 Ken returned to his roots in Tayside, Scotland and took up a position as Systems Analyst with Halliburton Manufacturing and Services Ltd in Arbroath. This post involved the analysis and design of software applications in the Costing, Payroll and Procurement areas, for software running on IBM mainframes. In 1983 Ken moved to Nixdorf Computer Ltd in Perth and become heavily involved in the development of software for Housing Associations. This development resulted in an integrated package which was installed in more than 40 Associations in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. As well as being the prime developer of the package Ken was subsequently the main pre-sales, post-sales and training resource. During his time with Nixdorf Ken also developed a Personnel package and was active in the support of Nixdorf's other products - Financial Ledgers, Purchase Order Processing, Stock Control and Sales Order Processing. In 1990 Ken took up a position with Mebus Ltd, a small software house in Dundee. Shortly after Ken joined Mebus Ltd, the company settled on Progress as its main development tool and took the decision to develop a new Housing Association package, using Progress, in conjunction with one of the largest Associations in Scotland, Link. Ken was the main architect of that package which is now being used by about 20 Associations throughout the UK as well as in the Irish Republic. Finally, in 1998, Ken founded Birse IT Solutions Ltd whose first contract was with Sky Television, providing a Project Management and Analysis / Design role within the arm of the organisation primarily concerned with the installation of set-top boxes and dishes. After a period of full-time work with Sky, Ken was able to amend this contract to a part-time position in order to return to work with Housing Associations. Since the Autumn of 1999 Ken has been working full-time in the training and support of a number of Associations in Scotland.
